The study included 60 women, with a mean age of 58.5 ± 6.90 years, a mean body weight of 70.9 ± 15.32 kg and a mean height of 164.8 ± 7.24 cm. The study population was divided into two groups of 30 subjects each: an experimental group (E) and a control group (C). All subjects were included in the study voluntarily. The experimental group consisted of older women attending fitness classes
at a leisure centre, and the control group consisted of 30 randomly selected older women. The subjects did not undertake any other physical activity during the study. The walking exercise programme was designed so that the subjects were in the aerobic work zone at all times during the training. During walking, heart rate was monitored with a heart rate monitor and used to determine the intensity of the load. The exercise programme was divided into three parts varying in volume and intensity. The exercise programme lasted three months, i.e. three workouts per week for 12 weeks, resulting in 36 workouts during the three-month treatment.
