Shared and task-specific muscle synergies of Nordic walking and conventional walking

This study compared muscle coordination patterns (synergies) during Nordic Walking (NW) and conventional walking in experienced Nordic Walking instructors. Using electromyography and advanced analysis techniques, the researchers found that both forms of walking share most lower-body and trunk muscle synergies. However, NW adds a unique upper-body synergy responsible for the poling action, activating muscles like the latissimus dorsi and triceps brachii. Despite this added task, NW does not require more complex motor control, making it appropriate for use in health-oriented and adapted physical activity programs. The findings support the view of NW as a full-body, low-complexity exercise with valuable benefits for coordination and muscle activation.
