Nordic walking as a new model of pulmonary rehabilitation for patients referred for lung transplantation – a preliminary report”

29 Mar 2025

The benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation for people with chronic lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis and interstitial pulmonary fibrosis have been described in the literature. Evidence-based guidelines for exercising patients before and after lung transplantation have not yet been developed. In the current study, the authors present preliminary results of pulmonary rehabilitation using the Nordic walking technique (PRNW) in patients qualified for lung transplantation surgery in Poland. Evaluating a group of ten patients after 12 wks. PR-NW, the authors observed a significant improvement in exercise tolerance (assessed by the 6-minute walk test) with no adverse effects. They found that the recommended exercise was safe and beneficial for patients with end-stage chronic lung disease who are qualified for lung transplantation, and the Nordic walking method should be the subject of future research in this group of patients.
