The impact of Nordic walking training on the gait of the elderly

5 Apr 2025

This research aimed to assess the impact of regular Nordic Walking on the gait characteristics of elderly individuals. Using inertial sensors, the authors compared three groups: sedentary elderly, physically active elderly practicing Nordic Walking, and young healthy adults. The study analyzed seven gait aspects, including spatiotemporal parameters, regularity, variability, complexity, and amplitude. Results revealed that Nordic Walking practitioners had significantly better gait regularity, velocity, and stride length than sedentary seniors—closely resembling the gait of younger adults. The findings suggest that Nordic Walking can effectively counteract age-related deterioration in walking patterns, supporting its use in health maintenance and fall prevention programs for older adults.
