Analysis of physiological responses to Nordic walking in COPD patients

31 Mar 2025

This study evaluated the physiological responses to Nordic Walking (NW) in patients with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Seven clinically stable patients participated in four exercise protocols: the standard 6-minute walk test (6MWT), Nordic Walking for 6 minutes on solid ground and sand, and an incremental shuttle test. Results showed that NW elicited higher oxygen consumption, ventilation, and heart rate compared to the 6MWT, especially when performed on sand. The findings suggest that NW can be safely implemented as a higher-intensity endurance training tool for COPD patients, even without direct supervision, supporting its use in long-term pulmonary rehabilitation and self-managed care.
