Effects of Nordic walking in Alzheimer’s disease: A single-blind randomized controlled clinical trial
5 Apr 2025
This single-blind randomized clinical trial evaluated the effects of a 24-week Nordic Walking (NW) intervention in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Thirty patients were assigned to either a control group receiving standard cognitive and physical therapies or an experimental group that also engaged in NW training twice a week. After 24 weeks, the NW group showed significant improvements in cognitive functions, including visual-spatial reasoning, verbal episodic memory, selective attention, and processing speed. Although MMSE scores did not significantly differ between groups, the intervention group maintained cognitive function while the control group showed decline. These findings suggest that NW may be an effective and accessible addition to therapeutic strategies for slowing cognitive decline in early-stage AD.
