Effect of physical exercise on cognitive function and brain measures after chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer (PAM study) protocol of a randomised controlled trial

The Physical Activity and Memory (PAM) study is a large, randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate the effects of a 6-month exercise program—including Nordic walking and strength training—on cognitive function and brain health in breast cancer survivors who have reported cognitive problems following chemotherapy. The trial includes 180 women, with one group participating in supervised exercise and the other maintaining their usual activity. Primary outcomes include verbal memory (assessed with HVLT-R) and brain structure and function (via MRI). The study explores the role of exercise-induced neurogenesis, brain volume changes, and improved cerebral perfusion as potential mechanisms. Findings could support the inclusion of physical exercise in post-cancer care to reduce long-term cognitive side effects of chemotherapy.
