Nordic walking versus natural walking an easy approach to comparing metabolic demand

5 Apr 2025

This research compared the metabolic demands of Nordic Walking (NW) and natural walking (WK) under real-world conditions using a simple and reproducible protocol. Fourteen physically active adults completed both walking forms on a flat 2.5 km course while monitored for speed and heart rate. Results showed significantly higher average and maximum heart rates during Nordic Walking, despite participants maintaining similar walking speeds in both conditions. These findings highlight NW as a more metabolically demanding yet well-tolerated exercise, ideal for individuals with low tolerance for exertion. The study supports using NW in fitness and rehabilitation programs and proposes an accessible protocol for future research in various environments.
