The Influence of Nordic Walking on Spinal Posture, Physical Function, and Back Pain in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Pilot Study
5 Apr 2025
In a 12-week intervention with 31 older adults, this pilot study assessed the effects of Nordic Walking (NW) on spinal posture, physical function, and back pain. While the training did not result in statistically significant improvements in thoracic kyphosis, sagittal alignment, or back extensor muscle strength/endurance, some physical function tests showed positive results. Specifically, participants demonstrated gains in upper and lower body strength and balance. The findings suggest NW may benefit physical function in community-dwelling seniors but has limited effects on spinal posture and back pain, especially among those without severe kyphotic changes. Further studies on larger and more clinically affected populations are recommended.
