The Effects of Nordic Walking and Slope of the Ground on Lower Limb Muscle Activity

This controlled study assessed electromyographic (EMG) activity in six lower limb muscles during Nordic Walking and regular walking on flat and inclined surfaces. Among 22 healthy male participants, Nordic Walking led to increased activation of muscles such as the gluteus medius and biceps femoris during the first half of the stance phase, indicating enhanced demands on hip stability and knee control. In contrast, some muscles showed reduced activity during the swing phase. Importantly, uphill walking induced the greatest increase in muscle activation across both conditions. The results underscore the importance of proper Nordic Walking technique and suggest its value in strength training, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement. The slope of the terrain is a powerful variable to amplify muscular engagement during walking.
