Differences in Ground Reaction Forces and Shock Impacts Between Nordic Walking and Walking

This biomechanical study compared ground reaction forces (GRF) and shock impacts during Nordic Walking (NW) and regular walking (W) using accelerometry and force platform analysis. Conducted on experienced NW instructors, the study revealed significantly higher forces and accelerations at heel strike in NW—up to 30% greater than in W—while forces during takeoff were lower. Shock transmission to the tibia and head also increased, especially at faster speeds. These findings challenge the assumption that NW always reduces joint loading and suggest that its biomechanical effects vary depending on walking phase and technique. The results carry important implications for using NW in health-oriented exercise programs, especially for populations with joint sensitivity or osteoporosis risk.
