Effect of 8-week Nordic walking training on nondominant hand grip and shoulder strength in middle-aged women

5 Apr 2025

This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of an 8-week Nordic Walking program on upper body strength in the nondominant arm of middle-aged women. Participants were assigned to a Nordic Walking group, a brisk walking group, or a control group. While all groups saw some changes, only the Nordic Walking group showed significant gains in grip strength and shoulder flexion/extension in the nondominant limb. These findings suggest that the bilateral, repetitive motion involved in Nordic Walking effectively engages underused muscle groups and helps balance strength between the dominant and nondominant arms. The results support Nordic Walking as a safe and accessible form of training for improving functional upper body strength.
